Get started

Slow Ways is Britain’s national walking network.

Each Slow Way is an A-to-B route that links two towns, cities or villages, and there are thousands of routes – wherever you are in Britain you are not far from a Slow Way.

How to use Slow Ways

Use the network to find a new place to explore, to travel to your neighbouring town, or for creating your own bespoke trail. Link several routes together and it’s perfect for sponsored walks, pilgrimages, or personal challenges.

Ideas for using Slow Ways

Use Slow Ways for the epic or the everyday.

You can:

  • > explore your area
  • > collect or ‘bag’ routes
  • > commute between towns
  • > create long trails as a challenge, for training, for pilgrimages or for multi-day adventures
  • > meet someone in the middle for a cup of tea!

Find a route

Browse the map on the homepage or use the search box to find routes. Zoom in or out, and click on routes (lines) and places (dots).

Clicking on a line will take you to its route page.

Enjoy a route

You can follow routes either on the web page or by downloading our iOS app or our Android app. You can also download a gpx.

Save routes

Use the journey planner to select routes you’d like to walk, and save them as a ‘waylist’. See your waylists on your account dashboard along with many other progress stats.

Use routing to create a chain of routes between any two places in the country, and save them as a waylist too.

Review a route

How was it? If you’ve got time, leave a review after your walk to inspire and support others to follow in your footsteps. Only review a route if you’ve walked the whole thing.

Help make the network better

All of the routes are made by people, for people. If you want to help develop the network there are lots of ways to get more involved.

All profits from maps, artwork and clothes go into the Slow Ways Travel Fund. This targeted fund will cover expenses for young people who might not otherwise go on Slow Ways journeys.
